22nd Street Trail Steps Project: Friends of Potrero Hill Recreation Center (GBD Fiscal Sponsorship)

The Project

The 22nd St Trail Steps Project was initiated by the Friends of Potrero Hill Recreation Center almost a decade ago in partnership with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department. The Friends of Potrero Hill Recreation Center is composed of community members working to make the neighborhood’s recreation center even better, and the GBD is proud to be the Fiscal Sponsor and to support their project to improve a steep, rock and dirt path on the park’s north edge by building a box-step trail stair.

The Potrero Hill Recreation Center, at the crest of Potrero Hill, has nearly eleven acres of ballfields, basketball and tennis courts, children’s and toddlers’ play areas, a large dog run, and a large indoor gymnasium with community rooms, all encircled by walking trails with spectacular views of the Bay, the Central Waterfront, and the downtown skyline.  The path is the only way to access the park from the east, providing entry from the Potrero Annex housing complex and Dogpatch. It is also a key portion of a 3-block pedestrian way connecting Potrero Hill residents to Dogpatch providing access to the 22nd St. Caltrain Station, the T Line, the Dogpatch Commercial District and the waterfront.

Status

Plans for the stair are complete and approved by Rec Park and are undergoing final city reviews and permitting, with construction scheduled to begin in the Winter of 2025 -26.  The project has been generously supported with a major grant from UCSF and substantial donations from the The Power Station Foundation, Keith Goldstein & Donna Warrington and, Russel Simmons and numerous donations from neighbors and supporters.
